L'affaire éclata le 26 juin 1995: Stéphane Swirog, livre l'information, rapportant briévement une histoire relatée par l'un des de ses collégues militaires stationnés à Djibouti: il s'agissait d'une découverte effectuée par le commandant Cousteau dans une fosse marine au large de Djibouti, ou se situent des ilots dans le golfe de Tadjoura et plus particulièrement dans la passe de El-Kharab. Selon le commandant, elle n'aurait pas été révélée car elle aurait entrainé des conséquences trop importantes sur les connaissances actuelles.

L'expérience aurait consisté à immerger une carcasse de chameau dans une cage destinée à l'observation des requins et la cage en serait ressortie broyée comme par quelque créature formidable. Aucune preuve confirme le sujet mais cette rumeur est trés répandue en république de Djibouti. En 1996, un autre témoignage d'un militaire qui été en mission dans la région. Selon ce dernier, l'équipe Cousteau serait arrivée à Djibouti et aurait effectivement plongé une carcasse dans une cage, et celle-ci aurait été entiérement broyée lors de sa remontée.

Le commandant aurait plongé et vu quelque chose: il aurait déclaré que ce qu'il avait vu était trop important pour le dévoiler à l'humanité. La découverte du commanant serait-elle "la chose" dont parle Pierre Clostermann ? L'étude des grands fonds et des fosses abyssales est encore incomplète et si cette information se révélait exacte, elle confirmerait sans aucun doute l'existence d'une espèce animale particulièrement fantastique, inconnue ou à redécouvrir.

Quelle créature aurait pu pulvériser une cage aux requins, attirée par un appàt ? Le premier sur la liste est connu : il s'agit du grand requin blanc (Carcharodon Carcharias). Un tel grand blanc, si puissant soit-il, serait-il capable de broyer une cage à requins ? On peut en douter, surtout connaissant le savoir-faire et la compétence de l'équipe Cousteau.

Elargissons donc notre champ de recherches dans la famille des requins et venons-en bien sur à l'ancétre du grand blanc, à savoir le gigantesque carcharodon megalodon du miocène. Il s'agit probablement du plus gros poisson ayant jamais vécu, avec une taille oscillant entre 15 à 25 mètres et des dents de 20 centimètres de haut, les màchoires de ce super géant des mers ayant une ouverture oscillant entre i,50m et 1,80m.

En 1954, le cotre Australien Rachel Cohen passait en cale séche à Adelaide pour un carénage: il est trés interessant de noter que le demi cercle décrit par l'implantation des dents et des traces avait pratiquement un mètre de rayon. Le capitaine dudit bateau a eu souvenir d'un gros choc s'etant produit de nuit lors d'une tempète au large de Timor. Aprés une étude approfondie de la coque, des ichtologues Australiens ont conclu que l'animal possesseur d'une telle dentition devait mesurer approximativement 24 mètres. Il y a quelque part dans le pacifique, sans doute normalement en grande profondeur, des requins de la pire espèce ayant cette taille.
Closterman cite dans son livre de témoignage de David G.Stead du museum de Sidney qui écrivait en 1963 dans "sharks and rays of australien seas" :

" J'ai eu entre les mains des dents de carcharodon draguées dans le pacifique; ce n'étaient pas des fossiles, quelques unes étaient mème trés récentes et avaient appartenu à des spécimens de 25 à 30 mètres de long."

L'aire de répartition du grand blanc est immense; il est connu dans toutes les mers du monde. Quand au carcharodon megalodon, s'il existait encore, il devrait habiter les mèmes biotopes mais certainement à des profondeurs plus proches de celles ou sont censés vivre les calmars géants.

Noel Kemp, géologue agréé du Tasmanian Museum, compare dans l'illustration une dent fossile avec la machoire complète d'un grand blanc qui avait une longueur de 5 mètres: la grosseur de la dent fossile indique qu'elle a appartenu à un requin de 12 mètres de long. Il ne serait donc pas étonnant de trouver au large de Djibouti de tels animaux, le grand blanc fréquentant du reste cette zone de l'océan indien.

Un animal préhistorique ?

Mème si l'hypothèse du carcharodon megalodon est séduisante, d'autres suspects pourraient fort bien étre retenus. On peut penser au Mosasaure, qui vivait au crétacé, à la fin de l'ére secondaire. Il s'agissait d'énormes lézards dont le corps faisait penser à celui d'un énorme crocodile. Avec leurs puissantes dents, ils pouvaient broyer n'importe quoi et pourquoi pas une cage à requins ? Ces animaux avaient une longueur oscillant entre 12 et 15 mètres et étaient les grandes terreurs des océans de l'époque. Ils sont officiellement éteints depuis 70 millions d'années mais sous la dénomination de serpent de mer, on retrouve souvent leur silhouette caractéristique de trés grand crocodile.

Au crétacé inférieur vivait le kronosaurus qui était le plus grand et le plus lourd des plésiosaures à cou court de la région australienne et qui était une version reptilienne de notre actuel cachalot. Son cràne aplati au sommet, long et massif, mesurait 3 mètres, pratiquement le quart de la longueur totale de son corps, et était plus grand et plus fort que celui du plus gigantesque des dinosaures carnivores. La longueur totale de l'animal était évaluée entre 12 et 15 mètres. L'un de ses derniers représentants est certainement celui qui fit la stupeur de l'équipage de l'U 28, le 30 juillet 1915.

Le sous-marin torpilla dans l'atlantique nord le navire britannique Iberian et à la suite de l'explosion sous-marine de ce dernier, les membres de l'U 28 aperçurent avec les débris de l'épave un gigantesque animal soulevé par la déflagration: selon le rapport du commandant du sous-marin, Georg Gunther Freiherr Von Forstner, l'animal qui disparut dans l'eau au bout de 10 à 15 secondes meurait environ 20 mètres de long et ressemblait par sa forme à un crocodile, avec quatre membres munis de puissantes palmures et une longue tète s'effilant en pointe. Etonnant témoignage, surtout lorsque l'on sait qu'il vient d'un marin professionnel.

Une pieuvre géante ?

Le dernier prétendant à ce mystère pourrait étre, comme le suggére Christian le Noel, cryptozoologue reconnu par ses nombreuses expériences sur le terrain, une pieuvre géante de type grégaire vivant dans d'immenses trous ou cavernes et n'ayant aucune raison de remonter à la surface. L'exemple le plus significatif de l'existence de tels monstres est celui relatif au cadavre retrouvé à Saint-Augustine en 1896, dont les restes immenses appartenaient à une espéce de pieuvre dont les mensurations n'ont aucune commune mesure avec les plus grosses que nous connaissons actuellement. Des pieuvres inconnues aussi grandes n'auraient aucune difficulté à broyer des cages à requins. C'est certainement la piste la plus intéressante à suivre, c'est aussi la croyance des indigénes de la régions.

Tout est possible à ce stade de l'enquète. Le seul élément à notre disposition, matériel mais non visible, est le fait que la cage à requins fut broyée par quelque animal ayant une force considérable. L'élément qui nous manque est celui concernant l'état de la dite cage et nous ne savons pas non plus si les indices relevés à son examen sauraient nous faire remonter jusqu'à la véritable identité de l'agresseur.

Notons que dans son ouvrage "Monstres des lacs et des Océans" (éditions plein sud, 1996) Richard D. Nolane précise que d'aprés Jean Jacques Barloy, le commandant cousteau aurait réussi à filmer le monstre et conserverait le document dans un coffre avec ordre de ne jamais l'en sortir car il serait de mauvaise qualité et néfaste à sa réputation. Il y aurait aussi une brochure qu'un des correspondants de Barloy aurait eue entre ses mains.

Barloy au cours de l'émission Sciences au naturel de Marie-Odile Monchicourt diffusée le 5 octobre 1987 sur france-inter, révéla :

" Le monstre de Djibouti vivrait dans le Koubé, qui est une sorte de petite mer intérieure aux eaux noires et bordées de falaises verticales. Le monstre y serait entré autre-fois et ne pourrait plus en ressortir (soit parce qu'il a grandi, soit parce que les courants l'empèchent de partir). Cette créature ressemblerait à une gigantesque raie. Tous les ans aurait lieu une cérénomie organisée par des habitants du lieu qui considéreraient la bète comme un dieu de la mer. Ils descendent dans les eaux noires du Koubé un chameau vivant, dans une cage, en guise d'offrande. trente secondes aprés ils remontent la cage mais celle-ci ainsi que le camélidé ont disparu. Il y a eu entre-temps quelques remous pour témoigner du drame. Cousteau aurait parait-il réussi à filmer le monstre. Il conserverait le document dans un coffre-fort, avec ordre de ne jamais le sortir. En effet, le film serait de mauvaise qualité et Cousteau craindrait pour sa réputation. Il aurait également écrit une brochure intitulée: la bète ou la chose "

En dehors de ce témoignage qui passa sur les ondes, il y a un mutisme complet sur le film et la brochure.

Comme le disait le commandant cousteau :

" Mes amis, je crois que la mer nous réserve encore bien des surprises......."

The Herculoids battled to defend their planet from menaces on Amzot/Quasar and from outer space. All of the Herculoids displayed Human-level intelligence as well as emotions, and Zandor and Tarra both displayed a working knowledge of complex alien technologies as well as the ability to pilot interstellar spacecraft—but essentially, Zandor, Tarra, Dorno, and the Herculoids were fighting to keep Amzot/Quasar a technology-free, primitive planet. This is further indicated by the pseudo-barbarian outfits of Zandar, Tarra, and Dorno and the fact that technology was used mainly by the various villains, but rarely if ever by the heroes. Although the "speech" of their companions was limited and repetitive, Zandor, Tarra and Dorno demonstrated that Gloop and Gleep, at least, had a comprehensive mode of communication, and that they could at least understand and interpret this language (c.f. "The Mutoids:" "Gleep says that the aliens who landed are attacking Dorno and Tundro"). The "voices" used in the shows were actually brief tracks supplied by two actors and reused throughout the series, in keeping with Hanna-Barbera's thrifty ethos.

A number of episodes featured alien invaders who came to Amzot/Quasar to seek revenge against Zandor for an unspecified battle or adventure from the past. All were apparently technocratic and the alien's grudges seemed to basically boil down to them being stymied in their attempts at bringing technology to Amzot/Quasar, which the apparently primitivistic Zandor wanted to avoid.

The show's opening theme was a fully orchestral composition, suggesting uncommon heroism. An alternate opening theme was also utilized for some episodes. All of the show's incidental music was recycled from Jonny Quest.[citation needed]

In some of the seasons, the episodes opened with the following narration: "Somewhere out in space live The Herculoids...Zok the laser-ray dragon! Igoo the giant rock ape! Tundro the tremendous! Gloop and Gleep, the formless fearless wonders! With Zandor their leader, and his wife, Tarra, and son, Dorno, they team up to protect their planet from sinister invaders! All-strong! All-brave! All-heroes!! They are The Herculoids!!!"

The Japanese giant salamander, being restricted to streams with clear cool water, is entirely aquatic and nocturnal. Unlike other salamanders who lose their gills early in their life cycle, they only breach their heads above the surface to obtain air without venturing out of the water and onto land. Also due to their large size and lack of gills, they are confined to flowing water where oxygen is abundant. When threatened, these salamanders can excrete a strong-smelling milky substance whose odor resembles that of Japanese pepper (hence its name, giant pepper fish). It has very poor eyesight, and possesses special sensory cells covering its skin, running from head to toe and termed the lateral line system. These sensory cells host hair-like shapes that detect minute vibrations in the environment, and are quite similar to the hair cells of the human inner ear. This feature is essential for its hunting because of its poor eyesight. It feeds mainly on insects, frogs and fish. It has a very slow metabolism and lacks natural competitors. It is a long-lived species, with the captive record being an individual that lived in the Natura Artis Magistra, the Netherlands, for 52 years. In the wild they may live for nearly 80 years.

The Thing (aka John Carpenter's The Thing) is a 1982 science fiction horror film directed by John Carpenter, written by Bill Lancaster, and starring Kurt Russell. The film's title refers to its primary antagonist: a parasitic extraterrestrial lifeform that assimilates other organisms and in turn imitates them. It infiltrates an Antarctic research station, taking the appearance of the researchers that it kills, and paranoia occurs within the group.

Ostensibly a remake of the classic 1951 Howard Hawks-Christian Nyby film The Thing from Another World, Carpenter's film is a more faithful adaptation of the novella Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell, Jr. which inspired the 1951 film.[1] Carpenter considers The Thing to be the first part of his Apocalypse Trilogy,[2] followed by Prince of Darkness and In the Mouth of Madness. Although the films are unrelated, each feature a potentially apocalyptic scenario; should "The Thing" ever reach civilization, it would be only a matter of time before it consumes Humanity and takes over the Earth.

The theatrical box office performance of the film was poor.[3] This has been attributed to many factors, including Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, which was released at the time and features a more optimistic view of alien visitation.[4][5][6][7] However, The Thing has gone on to gain a cult following with the release on home video.
